1) With reference to one named industrial concentration in the European Union which you have studied, explain how such factors originally attracted industry to your chosen area. 5 marks

Answer: Factors that originally attracted industry to the Sambre-Meuse in Belgium are that the area was situated on top of coal. This means it was a perfect location to set up mines to harvest the coal. As coal is used as a power source many steel works started setting up near the mines so they could use it to power their machines. The Sambre-Meuse is an area filled with canals and rivers, because the Sambre-Meuse is a large area of land industries could expand out without the worry of running out space for a long time. This was originally ideal as it allowed the coal to transported. in the Sambre-Meuse the climate is not at any extreme temperatures . Also rail links had been set up in the area and ,as trains can carry a lot as many industries will be locating here transport links could be shared as it is then cheaper to transport materials again, they were also chosen to transport coal. The steel works that had set up gave a number of jobs to the skilled workforce located beside the industries. This gave people jobs and the steel works was able to hire people to work for them. The idea that these industries were also located near markets where they could sell their products (such as Lile and Charleroi)  means they didn't have to spend lots of money on transporting anything over very large distances.
